Masdar
Introduction:-
My topic is about Masdar. Masdar is a
renewable energy company that develops and provides projects that answers the
problems in making the environment clean. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of
mubadala Development Company.
Masdar is an Arabic word which means
“the source “. Masdar has four Primary Objectives, these are:
1- To help the
growth of the country’s economy.
2- To help the
country to be the capital developer of renewable technology.
3- To help achieve
the goal of Abu Dhabi of providing sustainable solutions to global energy
market.
4- To provide
significant contribution for human development.
Masdar was established to
develop and manage Masdar City.
Early history:-
In April 2008, the
company established its first subsidiary in Germany, Masdar PV, which
manufactures photo voltaic films. Masdar PV built its first plant in Ichtershausen,
Germany and the second in Abu Dhabi, UAE. It operates in private equity through
the Masdar clean technology fund. In March 2008, Masdar and Serer Grupo De Ingereria
of Spain founded a joint venture Torresol Energy to build and operate
concentrated solar power stations.
In September 2008, Masdar
invested in win wind, a Finnish wind turbine company.
The Abu Dhabi Future
Energy Company developed and operates Masdar’s solar power plan, the Shams 1
solar power station. It is a concentrated solar power station located in
Madinat Zayed, Abu Dhabi which will be the largest power station in the world.
Masdar and the Government
of Seychelles, develops a wind farm near the Mahe Island. Also with the help
and cooperation of E.ON, Masdar develops the London Array wind farm.
Development:-
Masdar
has five units, Masdar Institute, Masdar Capital, Masdar Power, Masdar Carbon,
and Masdar City.
Masdar
Institute is an independent research – driven graduate institute developed in
cooperation with the Massachusetts institute of technology (MIT). Focusing in
the development of advanced alternative energy, environment technologies and
sustainability.
Masdar Capital aims to build a
portfolio of the world’s most promising renewable energy and clean technology
companies.
Masdar Capital targets investments
that have a great potential globally. Masdar Capital is specifically focused on
the following sectors.
·
Clean Energy.
·
Environmental Resources.
·
Energy and Material Efficiency.
·
Environmental Services.
Masdar power is a developer and
operator of renewable power generation projects.
Masdar Carbon develops a project that
aims to reduce the carbon emission through energy efficiency and waste heat / CO2
recovery, and also through carbon capture and storage (ccs).
Masdar city
is an emerging global clean – technology cluster. It is a highly dense,
pedestrian – friendly development where the current and future technology for
renewable energy are implemented and marketed.
Modern
Developments:-
In summer of
2014 is said to be the completion of the International Renewable Energy Arena (IRENA).
The headquarters will be the most advanced, sustainable multi – use complexes in the United Arab Emirates.
Masdar is
also developing a 30 mega watts wind farm and a photo voltaic array on sir Bani
Yas Island, these will contribute in generating an increase of seven percent of
energy needs.
Conclusion:-
Masdar city
demonstrates that renewable source technology, research and development can and
the economic growth of the country and the development of cities are
increasingly sustainable and emission free. “Abu Dhabi yesterday broke ground
on Masdar city, the world’s first zero-carbon, zero-waste, car-free city”. (Kharroubi,
M.
2009) With this in mind, let ecological project led development guide cities to
be more sustainable in the future.
